Ridding the streets of drugs

Limpopo – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo are hard at work through joint intelligence-led operations to eradicate the mushrooming of drug abuse in several areas of the province.

In the Modimolle cluster, two suspects aged 30 and 36, were arrested for the possession of 1,108 sachets of nyaope on Friday 22 February. 

The police were observing a possible drug operation in the area when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle. They followed the vehicle to the Eers Bewoon area and waited for the suspects to enter. Subsequently, the two were arrested for possession of drugs. The police also confiscated cash found on the suspects. 

On 23 February, in the Polokwane central business district (CBD), a 25-year old man was arrested for the possession of nyaope. The police noticed that the man was acting suspiciously and searched him. During the process, the suspect was found in possession of 117 sachets of nyaope and cash to the amount of R4289.60.

In Northam, a 42-year old man was arrested on 23 February for the possession of drugs. The suspect was observed, cornered and arrested following a tip-off from members of the community. He was searched and three sachets of cocaine were found in his possession.

The suspects arrested during these operations will appear before various magistrate courts around the province. 

The SAPS acting provincial commissioner for Limpopo, major general Jan Scheepers, applauded members of the community on the continuous support they provide to the police. He thanked them for giving SAPS quality and reliable information which  has led to these arrests.
