MEDICLINIC THABAZIMBI OPEN

Thabazimbi – Located at the foot of the Ysterberg in the bushveld, Mediclinic Thabazimbi services the surrounding farming and mining communities. Due to increasing patient volumes, ageing architecture and the inability to expand on current premises, the decision was made early in 2016 to secure new premises for Mediclinic Thabazimbi. 

Mediclinic Thabazimbi is proud to have opened the doors of their new hospital premises on 15 December 2017. Construction began mid-2016 and the final phase of the project was completed in December 2017.

“With the interest of our patients at heart, we are focused on ensuring that the experience our patients have within our hospitals meets their expectations, while still providing the same uncompromised level of care,” Koert Pretorius, chief executive officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa explains. “Our decision to expand in a new location was based on our ability to ensure that the new design would meet the growing demand for services – where quality healthcare is a priority for the entire community.” 

The driving force behind the newer hospitals is to create some of South Africa’s finest hospitals, whilst integrating the patient’s experience and wellbeing into every aspect of construction. The new 34 bed hospital includes a 24 hour Emergency Centre, general, maternity, paediatric and high care units. 

Nursing stations are conveniently situated in close proximity to the rooms to ensure effective monitoring and care. The new laminar flow theatre is state of the art and the hospital also provides access to radiology, pathology and pharmacy services operating in the hospital. The IT infrastructure within the hospital includes a convergence ready network, allowing the hospital to support a fully integrated system for all role players in the hospital, as a future development.  

“We are fortunate to have a number of environmentally friendly aspects to our building design including solar panels and electric heat pumps for heating water. Care has been taken by our infrastructure team to ensure water can be recycled from our autoclaves to areas such as the water wise garden,” says Martjie du Preez, hospital general manager of Mediclinic Thabazimbi. “With power load shedding being a common occurrence in our region, we have two generators to ensure the continuous provision of care in our hospital.” 

The hospital also has a borehole on-site to provide emergency water supply to the building. Mediclinic Thabazimbi’s envelope design (referring to layer between the internal and external areas of the hospital) has been optimised to reduce the need for additional heating/ cooling inside the structure; thus optimising energy efficiencies.

Chairperson of the directors committee, Dr Willem du Plessis expresses enthusiasm for the new facility: “We are thankful that after years of anticipation we are able to move to this modern and efficient health care facility. We are very excited to utilise the new hospital!” 

Dr Pieter de Kock, shareholder and member of the directors committee for the hospital agrees: “Credit must go to the Mediclinic team and especially the builders, who produced a phenomenal building with precision ahead of the intended deadline.” 

The hospital is conveniently located near to the R510 on the outskirts of town, with sufficient, easily accessible parking available for visitors and day patients. We are proud of the facilities on offer, and it can only enhance the experience of our patients.
