BEWARE OF ‘COVID LOTTO’ SCAM!  Letter to the editor

SA – During these challenging economic times, it is sad and unfortunate that criminals are scamming people off their money or obtaining personal information that put those they are targeting at serious risk.

In one of the scams that I have been alerted to, criminals have been sending emails to unsuspecting victims informing them that “your e-mail address has just been selected the winner of US$8,500,000 (eight million five hundred thousand United States dollars.)”

The email further instructs the recipient to follow instructions that involve sending personal information such as bank account details, full name, address as well as their cell numbers so that “the money can be deposited”. I advise anyone who might receive such emails not to respond to such scams. If something is too good to be true, then it probably is not true! In any case, how can someone win a lotto draw when they have not entered such a competition?
