Please don’t kill me, I have a family  [Letter to the editor]

Thabazimbi/ Northam – I stay in Thaba and work in Amandelbult. Just like hundreds of other commuters, every morning before the sun comes up, I take the R510 from Thaba to Amandelbult to make a living. 

I like my job. However, I HATE driving to work. Some mornings, the traffic flows perfectly and I just see the red tail lights weave in one long string, all at the same speed, in one direction. In unison we go to work. For years, this picture is part of my daily existence. It’s etched in my memory.

 
However, on most days, there will be more than one driver, deciding to put fate to the test. It’s no joke… Sometimes, in pitch black conditions, a car would overtake more than 10 vehicles in one go. This time of the morning is no joke. There are cattle, oncoming cars speeding, potholes and sometimes even a car with no lights. In terms of safety, I believe I have said enough. 

I beg you, don’t kill me or my fellow commuters. We have families. Get up earlier or get a lift. Don’t be reckless.
