Ambulance coming – veer left or right?   [Letter to the editor] 

SA – Whenever I hear sirens, I immediately go on high alert and check around me to see where they are coming from. Because I know every minute counts when it comes to saving lives, so I want to ensure that I am not the one blocking an ambulance. I just wish others had the same courtesy! 
Veering to the left or right depends if you are on a freeway or not.
If not on a freeway, veer to the left and let the ambulance pass. Do not pull to the right or stop in the middle lane when there is room to pull to the left.
If on a freeway – make sure you are not in the emergency lane (yellow lane) as it is reserved for police vehicles, fire-fighting vehicles and ambulances.
Regulation 298A of the National Road Traffic Act explains that yellow lane driving is not allowed except for a real emergency like a breakdown, a medical emergency, or if you are rushing to a hospital. It may not be used as a passing lane or as a free way. 
Only emergency vehicles may use the yellow lane with the exception of single-lane carriageways. In this case vehicles may move into the yellow lane to allow faster moving vehicles to pass. 
So, next time when you hear the sirens, don’t be that [insert swear word of your choice here] and move safely out of the way of the ambulance so that they can pass you to save someone’s life.
