BE SAFE ON THE ROADS

Thabazimbi – December marks the start of the festive season. This is supposed to be a joyous time where people get the opportunity to enjoy quality time with loved ones, relax and recharge in preparation for the new year. 

This is also the time of year when South African roads become a blood bath as motorists travel to their families or holiday destinations.

According to statistics, crashes recorded during the 2018 festive season total 1,286 – which resulted in 1,612 fatalities nationwide. Among these Limpopo recorded 138 motor vehicle accidents and 178 fatalities on the road.

Platinum Bushvelder spoke to Thabazimbi Traffic Department acting traffic manager Gerrie Visagie about road safety tips for this festive season.

“Making sure your vehicle is roadworthy is the first step towards a safe journey. Check that your tyres are in a good condition, that your breaks are working and that all the lights on your vehicle are operational and clear.” 

He also urged road users to adhere to the rules of the road, abide by the road signs and stick to the speed limit. Be extra cautious on roads that you are not familiar with especially now during the rainy season when wild animals are migrating. Never drink and drive!
