HIGH ACCIDENT ZONE

Thabazimbi – On Thursday 11 April, yet another truck felt the wrath of the R510 Warmbad road in Thabazimbi. 

This occurred a mere three days after the truck accident on 8 April in which truck driver Joshua Kusekwa lost his life. 

This has become a high-risk accident zone as this is the third accident to occur at this very same spot since the start of 2019. 

In an interview with Platinum Bushvelder, David Mugumba, the driver of the truck that crashed on 11 April said: “I was supposed to drive with our companies’ truck, but we didn’t want to take any chances.

We rented another truck, believing it could handle this specific stretch of road better. Everyone heard about last week’s fatality.” 

David vividly remembers the accident. “When I entered this high accident zone, I slowed down. I hoped for a small uphill on the road… But by the time I reached town, I realised there was no way for me to be able to stop the truck in time.”

“My last thought was that there was no time for me to be scared. I had to keep cool and think clearly. There were three ways for me to go… Right, left or straight.

If I chose to go right or left, I would have collided with traffic and could have injured others. I had to continue straight,” David added. 

David sustained minor injuries, but his passenger sustained a serious leg fracture.
