R2 Million Dagga and Codeine Bust on R510

Thabazimbi – A major drug bust has put two foreign nationals behind bars after they were caught with a truckload of dagga and codeine-based medicines on the R510 near Lephalale.

On Saturday, 13 September 2025, members of Northam SAPS, Thabazimbi SAPS, and Zimbi Security swooped in on the vehicle following a tip-off. Their swift action uncovered 40 bales of Swazi dagga valued at R1.5 million, along with assorted codeine-based medicines and painkillers worth an estimated R500,000.

The suspects, identified as Cuthbert Derera (30) and Wishborn Fufa (39), were unable to account for the origin of the illicit goods. Both men were arrested on the spot and detained at Thabazimbi SAPS.

They made their first court appearance at the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 September 2025, facing charges of possession of dagga and contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Act. The case has been postponed to 22 September 2025 for a formal bail application.

Provincial commissioner of Limpopo, lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe, commended the teamwork and vigilance of the officers. Police investigations are ongoing.
