Court grants final postponement in Van der Walt assault case

Thabazimbi – The wheels of justice continue to grind slowly in the assault case of Leon van der Walt, who was brutally assaulted in September last year – but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. 

The trial against the accused, Andrew Wynand Hoffman, has once again been postponed — this time to 17 July 2025 — but the court has declared this to be the final postponement.

This decision was made during the latest court appearance on 26 June 2025, where the matter was postponed for a possible plea of guilt and commencement of trial. The case has faced three delays since the trial phase was supposed to begin.

Leon was violently attacked in September 2024, and since then, he and his wife Monique have endured a long and trying wait for justice to be served. Despite the setbacks, they have remained strong, supported by the community’s ongoing encouragement and prayers. Court delays have included issues such as changes in legal representation and pending disclosure processes. 

The trial is set to resume at 08:30 on Thursday 17 July 2025.
