German tourist’s trust leads to tragic end in NORTHAM: Westphal brutally tortured and murdered 

Northam/ Moruleng – In a shocking incident that has cast a shadow over South Africa’s reputation as a tourist destination, a German visitor fell victim to a brutal crime that underscores the importance of vigilance and trust, especially in South Africa. 

The incident, occurring in an election year, highlights the critical balance South Africa must maintain in ensuring the safety of tourists, who contribute significantly to the nation’s economy.

Lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe, provincial commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, announced the swift arrest of three individuals connected to the heinous act. The suspects, aged between 24 and 46, are accused of assaulting and murdering 74-year-old Gunter Hermann Friedrich Westphal in Northam on Saturday night, 24 February 2024.

Gunter’s journey began in Botswana on 23 February, crossing into South Africa with plans to explore the country. His fatal mistake was offering a lift to an unknown hitchhiker, who appeared friendly and in need of assistance. 

This initial act of kindness led to a series of events culminating in tragedy.

After establishing a rapport, Gunter allowed the hitchhiker to drive. They stopped at a liquor store (in Moruleng), where they met two more individuals. The group then proceeded to what was supposed to be the hitchhiker’s residence. Upon arrival, the tourist was restrained, assaulted, tortured, and coerced into revealing his bank PIN code. The assailants stole cash, valuables, and then proceeded to transport him to a remote area in Northam, where they murdered him and attempted to dispose of his body.

The crime was uncovered when security officials and a rural safety member, patrolling the area, noticed a suspicious, number plate-less vehicle. Their investigation led to the discovery of Gunter’s body and the suspects’ arrest, with evidence including the victim’s belongings.

Lieutenant general Hadebe emphasised the betrayal of trust and the determination of the SAPS to secure a conviction. The suspects, identified as Abstain Madvimdo (24), Jan Thabonga Moshabi (35), and Thomas Moyo (36), have been charged with murder among other offenses.

As the community and the nation grapple with the implications of this crime, the focus remains on enhancing security measures and promoting a safe, welcoming environment for all tourists.

The investigation continues, with the police committed to uncovering all details of this appalling crime and ensuring justice for Gunter Hermann Friedrich Westphal.

The three suspects, identified as foreign nationals, were brought before the Northam Magistrates’ Court on Monday 26 February 2024, facing several charges, with murder being the most serious among them. 

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba provided an update on the proceedings, stating, “The court has ordered that they be held in police custody. The hearing for their case has been postponed to 4 March 2024, at which point they will have the opportunity to apply for bail.”
