Thabazimbi launches smart prepaid water meters against a backdrop of community debate

Thabazimbi – The Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM), in collaboration with Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde Mine, has embarked on the rollout of smart prepaid water meters, a move receiving mixed feedback from the community. 

“This initiative, supported by the National Government as part of a broader Debt Relief Programme, aims to introduce a cost recovery system for water usage,” a TLM statement reads on 7 February 2024. 

The decision to install prepaid meters is framed as a strategy to enhance municipal revenue collection and manage the debt owed to Magalies Water, while also allowing residents to monitor and control their water consumption. 

However, this initiative has not been met without scepticism. Community members have voiced their concerns on social media, questioning the timing and effectiveness of installing smart meters in a region grappling with frequent water shortages. Some residents go weeks on end with water shortages. Queries also extend to the implications for households relying on borehole water. 
So far, the installation of prepaid water meters has been successfully completed in several areas, including Northam Extensions 2 and 6, Mojuteng, Lefika, Northam Town, Wildebeeslaagte, and Thabazimbi Group 5. 

The rollout will continue across more regions within Thabazimbi, including Extensions 7, 17, 18, 31, 32, 35, 37, and 47, as well as Mircomatica, Hibiscus, Platinum Houses, and Bosveld Park.
As this initiative unfolds, the dialogue between the municipality and its residents remains crucial in addressing concerns and ensuring the community’s needs and reservations are considered.
