Major drug bust along R510 nets R3 million in heroin

Thabazimbi – In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Limpopo police made a major breakthrough with the interception of a vehicle with heroin valued at around R3 million. This high-stakes operation took place on the 1st of January, 2024, leading to the arrest of two foreign nationals.
Acting on precise intelligence, law enforcement officers zeroed in on a vehicle traveling on the R510 towards Thabazimbi from Tanzania. A meticulous search of the vehicle revealed a hidden false compartment cleverly crafted to transport a substantial quantity of heroin. The discovery of these drugs underscores the relentless efforts of the police in reducing the scourge of drug trafficking and keeping drugs off the streets.

The suspects, aged 55 and 56, are believed to be Tanzanian nationals. They are currently detained, and extensive investigations are underway to dismantle the network responsible for this significant drug smuggling operation.

The success of this operation is attributed to the collaborative efforts of various teams, including Northam Crime Intelligence Services (CIS), Thabazimbi SAPS, Thabazimbi CIS, Rooiberg SAPS, GT Security, PPS Thabazimbi (led by Petrus van Breda), Dinare Security, and Koedoeskop Rural Safety. This multidisciplinary approach reflects the commitment of the law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking in the region.

The operation unfolded early in the morning, around 06:30, when the teams received an alert to be on the lookout for a specific vehicle. Vigilant and prepared, they positioned themselves strategically along the R510. At approximately 08:47, their persistence paid off when a white Hilux, with two occupants, was intercepted. 

The arrest of the two Tanzanian citizens and the seizure of both the drugs and the vehicle mark a significant victory for the Thabazimbi SAPS and their allies in the fight against drug trafficking. This operation not only disrupts a major drug supply chain but also sends a strong message about the resolve of South African law enforcement agencies in keeping their communities safe from the dangers of illegal drugs.
