Northam landfill fire raises concerns: a call for responsible waste management
Northam – On Saturday 11 December 2023, residents of Northam witnessed a distressing scene as a massive fire engulfed the Northam landfill site. Thick, black smoke billowed into the sky, an alarming sight that raised immediate concerns among the community, especially given the landfill’s proximity to a local primary school.
The fire, which reportedly started when individuals sorting waste at the dumpsite attempted to make food, quickly spiralled out of control. Fuelled by the wind, the flames spread rapidly, creating a hazardous situation. Residents reported an unbearable combination of smoke and odour pervading the area.
In response to the crisis, the fire department was promptly summoned to the scene. Their efforts, alongside the invaluable assistance of community members and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), played a crucial role in managing the emergency. These volunteers bravely stepped in to regulate traffic amid reduced visibility caused by the dense smoke, recalling a past incident where poor visibility led to a severe head-on collision.
The absence of the police and traffic department during this critical time was noted with concern by several community members.
In light of these events, the Thabazimbi Local Municipality issued a press release on 11 December, highlighting the dangers posed by irresponsible waste disposal practices. The release emphasised the risks associated with burning materials, particularly plastics and rubber, which release harmful pollutants and contribute to air pollution. “These actions not only endanger human health, leading to respiratory issues among other concerns, but also harm the environment. Recent observations have identified instances where burning of waste materials has occurred, posing significant risks to the health and safety of our workers and the surrounding community. To address this concern, we are implementing a stringent monitoring system specifically targeting reclaimers at the landfill site.
Effective immediately, all reclaimers are reminded and required to adhere to the strict policy against burning rubbish. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary measures to ensure the well-being of all individuals involved”.
The municipality’s statement calls for collective action and responsibility in waste management.
As Thabazimbi grapples with the aftermath of the landfill fire, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible waste management. The community’s collaborative spirit in responding to the crisis is commendable, but it also underscores the need for greater awareness and adherence to proper disposal practices.
