THABAZIMBI UNITES AGAINST FURIOUS FLAMES

Thabazimbi - As the clock ticked 14:00 on Monday 11 September, the first alert call echoed in the Thabazimbi Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue (TFR) control room. A fire, which had started near Spitsrand, was spreading quickly, leading to a rallying response from the community and professional teams.

With the CPF, TFR, and Dinare Security at the forefront, they weren’t alone. Good Samaritans from Thabazimbi sprang into action. And they weren’t the only reinforcements as fire rescue teams from Anglo American Platinum’s Amandelbult Complex and Northam Platinum also joined hands in the effort. Amid the chaos and towering flames, firebreaks were meticulously conducted to prevent the blaze from expanding its wrath. By the early hours of 12 September, at around 02:30, it appeared that the worst was over. But the wind gave the fire new life at approximately 11:30, causing many in the community to offer up prayers for the fanning wind to settle down.

Their combined efforts, determination, and fervent prayers saw to it that by 15:30 on 12 September, the flames were finally subdued. The aftermath, however, was shocking. The fire’s path of destruction had spread to Bona Bona, consuming approximately 2,500 hectares of land, and impacting four farms. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 litres of water was dispensed in the firefighting efforts.
Yet, even amid this devastation, there’s a silver lining. As TFR director, Kobus Malan noted: “Fortunately, no injuries were recorded.” He added a heartfelt note of gratitude for the Thabazimbi community members, “A big thank you to those who supplied our fire responders with food and beverages, helping to sustain their energy levels.”

“This was the first major fire I’ve attended this season, and it was one for the books with a solid team working together. All the involved agencies and farmers united to control the fire, which was brilliant. Thabazimbi and the farming community once again stood together as one. The fire was tough in some places but was quickly subdued by the various teams,” added CPF member Christopher Booysen. While the cause of has not yet been confirmed, one thing is clear: the spirit of Thabazimbi’s community is unbreakable, showcasing resilience and unity when faced with adversity.
