Three days of archery
Thabazimbi – The nine archery students from Frikkie Meyer High school spent their long weekend in sweltering heat and a difficult archery course in Nylstroom.
They competed in the ARFAC preparation competition held for three days, 29, 30 April and 1 May 2023. Archery is a game of aiming and shooting straight arrows.
The word archery comes from the Latin word ‘arcus’ meaning bow. Our modern-day archery relies on an archer to have endurance and strong shoulders—a sharp eye in your aiming is also crucial.
The field discipline requires stamina (walking approximately 15km) and focus (112 arrows) in one day. Hats off to the young learners who did this 3-day competition! The 3-day course had the new competitors shooting distances of 29m while the more experienced youths tried their hand at the 48m distances.
All had tired and sore muscles at the end of three very hot days. It was a good experience to get to know all the archery rules for the field competition.
The Thabazimbi Archery Club dominated on the podium with Gary Bauer stepping up to get gold in the veteran freestyle unlimited category. Petrus van Breda (Sanifaa president and from Mocking Jay Archery Club in Kempton Park) came second, and Charles Bester (Thabazimbi Archery Club) came third.
17-year-old Maya Broekhuizen (Thabazimbi Archery Club) outdid the rest of the adult women’s class with a 30-point lead and got gold. Well done to these archers! The Thabazimbi Archery Club gets together every Tuesday at 18.00 at the Koos Cronje shooting range, Spitskop, Thabazimbi. Come join us!
