Don’t take matters into your own hands!  

[Letter to the Editor] 

I was driving home from work on Monday 24 April 2023 when I noticed smoke coming from the direction of a farm that I pass each day.

To confirm whether it was a controlled fire, I immediately contacted those in the know. After a lot of time and resources were spent to put out the flaming veld, it was discovered that a local had started the fire for security reasons. Please take note that the said local has no experience with controlling the spread of a fire! 

According to the local, the tall grass was a security hindrance as robbers could easily hide in the grass. Understandable as his reason might seem, I still believe that the local should have notified others in the area and asked for expert help. 

An uncontrolled fire spreads rapidly, placing lives in danger and wasting the resources of responders. Please, if you have such a problem, don’t make it bigger; contact your neighbours and appoint a person who has the necessary knowledge.
