WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES

Dwaalboom – The walls were all that were left standing after lightning struck the home of local businessman Marius de Beer’s on Monday 13 February shortly after the house was on fire. The house on the farm Keerom, is situated approximately 70 km outside Thabazimbi near Dwaalboom.

“We suspect that the fire started in the kitchen when lightning struck the roof at about 15:30,” said Marius’ girlfriend Ané Marx in an interview with Platinum Bushvelder.

Marius and Ané, who weren’t at home when the fire started, received a call at about 15:45 informing them that their house was on fire.     
One of their employees was in the kitchen when the lightning struck, and the roof caught fire. The kitchen and the loft were the first to be destroyed in the fire. It spread quickly, and all that was left of the beautiful interior, was ashes.
 
Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue (TFR), Matlabas Plaaswag, Thabazimbi Community Policing Forum (CPF) and members of the community rushed to the scene and worked hard to bring the blaze under control. The fire, which eventually reached the bar area of the house, died out at approximately 17:00. De Beer’s nearby lodge, where they often host hunters was left unscathed. No one was injured in the fire.
