Limpopo’s 2022 sportsman of the year
Thabazimbi – Sportsmen and women from Limpopo were recognised for their contribution to sport in Limpopo at a function hosted by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Wednesday 4 December 2022.
During the function, the Thabazimbi Archery Club was represented by three nominees: Gert Snyman for his leadership role at the South African International Field Archery Association (SANIFAA), Gary Bauer who was a gold medal winner at the 2022 World Field Archery Competition (WFAC) which was hosted in Estonia, and Maya Broekhuizen, also a gold medal winner at the 2022 WFAC 2022 and 2022 holder of the world record for junior female bowhunter.
The Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture honoured archers’ impact on the development of sport in Limpopo.
Archery excelled in the year 2022; three provinces now recognise Archery as a competitive sport. In the Cape, Gunther Kraemer was recognised as sportsman of the Cape Province for 2022 after receiving a gold medal at the 2022 WFAC. Kobus Barnard of the Free State was honoured as sportsman of the year in the Free State for the silver medal he received at the 2022 WFAC.
The highlight of this gala was when Bauer was announced as Limpopo’s 2022 sportsman of the year and received a cheque for R30,000 as prize money. The prize money will be used to cover Bauer’s sporting expenses as archery and the travel to competitions are costly and self-funded.
