Suspects in Steenekamp’s murder remain in custody 

Maroelasfontein/ Northam – Two suspects, Thabang Koos Moruwa (30) from Mokgalwaneng village, and Bhekimpilo Trevor Ncube (38), a Zimbabwean national, both appeared before the Northam Magistrates’ Court on Friday 16 September.

The duo is suspected of being involved in the murder of Niko Steenkamp and are facing charges of murder, house robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

Steenekamp’s bakkie was found abandoned on the Maroelasfontein [gravel] road on 6 September. His stepdaughter Christine Abreu de Jesus raised the alarm on social media and several organisations launched a search and rescue operation to help find Steenekamp.

It was later established that some items from Steenekamp’s farmhouse were missing which indicated foul play. At around 3pm Steenekamp’s body was found on his farm.

Investigations led to the arrest of five suspects. According to a close family member, the first suspect (Thabang Koos Moruwa) who was an employee of Steenekamp, implicated three other suspects but later changed his story. 

Police spokesperson sergeant Fortune Madisa confirmed that the three suspects could not be linked to the murder and have since been released. Moruwa then pointed the finger to a fifth suspect, who was then arrested. The case was postponed to 26 October and the accused will remain in custody until then.
