Deadly R510 claims 4 more lives

Northam – Four people lost their lives and two others sustained serious injuries on Saturday 31 July in a head-on collision involving a VW Polo and a Toyota bakkie along the R510 near Northam. 

Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mike Maringa said the driver of the VW Polo apparently attempted to overtake which resulted in the collision with the Toyota.      

“Four people, including the driver of the Polo were killed on impact. Two others sustained serious injuries,” Maringa said.  

The four were certified dead on scene by Netcare paramedics who stabilised and transported the injured to Amandelbult Hospital. Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue Department director Pierre Loots expressed his concern about the number of accidents they have been responding to along the R510 road.  

“We urge motorists to be extremely careful and to exercise restraint,” said Loots.

He also remarked that many of the accidents over the past two months on the R510 involved a VW Polo.

The cause of the accident is being investigated. At this stage, reckless driving and unsafe overtaking have been cited as the possible cause of the accident.
