Cop impersonators arrested   

Northam – In a victory for justice, six people impersonating police officers were arrested a few hours after they committed a crime.   

They allegedly held a Northam man hostage while they robbed him of R10,000, bank cards and a cellphone on Thursday 26 November. The victim was approached by four men and two women who were travelling in a white sedan. Pretending to be police officers, the suspects handcuffed the man, took him to a cement road outside Northam and sped off with his money and other valuables.

The Rustenburg and Zeerust police were alerted about the incident at around 18:15. It was established that the vehicle the suspects were using, belonged to a rental company. This enabled police to use live updates to locate the whereabouts of the suspects. The six impersonators were apprehended and detained at around 20:30 after their vehicle was stopped by the Zeerust police.

The stolen money and valuables were all recovered from the suspects, who will appear before the Zeerust Magistrates’ Court for possession of stolen property. The suspects will also face kidnapping charges when they appear before the Northam Magistrates’ Court.
