Head-on collisions surge

Limpopo – Twelve people were killed in road accidents in the Limpopo province during the weekend of Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November. This was a sharp increase from three deaths reported the weekend before.

In one of the accidents, one person died and two were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a Toyota SUV and a Ford Bakkie along the R81 at Sekgopo.

“Most of the accidents were reported in the Vhembe and Mopani districts. In one of the accidents, four people died in a head-on collision involving a Toyota Sedan and a Nissan Truck on the R36 Lefara road in Mopani,” spokesperson for the provincial department of transport and community safety Mike Maringa said.

Four others died in two separate accidents in the Vhembe district on Sunday 15 November. In the first accident, the driver of a GWM bakkie lost control and crashed into a wall along the D3716 road. Two passengers were killed on scene while the driver and another passenger sustained injuries. In the other accident, which occurred along the N1 outside Makhado, a Toyota and a Nissan collided head-on.

“The driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle and collided with an oncoming Toyota. Both drivers were declared dead on the scene,” Maringa added.
