Thabazimbi – In an emotional discovery that has stirred both heartache and hope within the Thabazimbi community, a newborn baby girl who was abandoned in a veld in Judith Street, was found alive early on Thursday morning, 1 February 2024.

The infant was discarded and left for dead in a red plastic bag with her umbilical cord still attached (and secured with a laundry pin) and was discovered around 07:00.

The shocking find quickly turned into a miraculous tale of survival as local residents, upon realising the baby was still breathing, wasted no time in alerting the authorities and emergency services. Responding with swift compassion, Public Protection Services (PPS) Thabazimbi and Thaba Fire and Rescue personnel ensured the baby was immediately taken to the local state hospital.

There, to the relief of all, the baby was found to be in a surprisingly good state and was subsequently placed in the maternity ward for care. The community’s response to the baby’s plight has been nothing short of extraordinary. Petrus van Breda, founder of PPS Thabazimbi, highlighted the outpouring of support, noting that numerous individuals and organisations have donated essential items for the baby, now affectionately named ‘Sarah’ by the woman who found her.  As police investigations continue into this heart-wrenching case, the incident has sparked a broader conversation about the challenges some expectant mothers face.

Most women are ecstatic when they find out that they are going to be a mother. Unfortunately, this exciting time can also be very scary for expecting mothers. Sometimes, women find themselves alone, underaged, ashamed, or without the necessary support structures in place to help them care for their babies. Under difficult circumstances, they might believe they have no alternative but to abandon their babies.

Should you be unable to care for your baby, please go to a hospital to give birth. This will not only give your baby a chance at life but will also be beneficial to your health. By using the correct channels, the baby will receive an ID number, which will help with the adoption process where the mother has 60 days to change her mind. Mothers who abandon their babies without seeking assistance will be charged with concealment of birth, where a DNA test is done to locate the mother who will face criminal charges if caught.

As Sarah begins her journey under the care of loving hands, the hope is that she grows up never having to bear the weight of how her life began, surrounded instead by love and the knowledge that she was, indeed, wanted.

In moments of despair, the community of Thabazimbi has shown that unity, compassion, and action can bring light to the darkest of situations. May the story of Sarah inspire continued support for vulnerable members of our community and reinforce the message that no one should have to face life’s challenges alone.

If you have any information about the parents, please contact SAPS Thabazimbi on 08600 10111 or sergeant Ndube directly at 071 355 0564.
