Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Thabazimbi – Three men accused of carrying out an armed robbery on Tuesday 2 June 2026 at a farm outside Thabazimbi remain behind bars after their court appearance.

The accused, Jerry Nkosi, Simphiwe Ndlovu and Manuel Langa, appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court, where the matter was postponed to Thursday 11 June 2026 for a formal bail application. The trio remains in custody in Thabazimbi.

According to police spokesperson colonel Malesela Ledwaba, three men armed with firearms and wearing balaclavas allegedly targeted customers who were standing in a queue to purchase goods at the farm. The victims were robbed of their valuables before the suspects fled the scene in a red VW Polo in the direction of Brits.

For many rural residents, incidents such as these strike a particularly deep chord. Farm attacks and rural robberies continue to be a source of concern across South Africa, with farming communities often describing the emotional impact of these crimes as extending far beyond the immediate victims. The isolation of many farms and smallholdings often leaves residents feeling especially vulnerable when violent crime occurs. Recent reports indicate that while the number of farm murders has fluctuated, violent farm attacks remain a serious concern for rural communities across the country.

A swift response by SAPS, private security companies, rural safety structures and RPL camera operators from Thabazimbi, Koedoeskop and Brits resulted in the suspects being tracked and arrested at Blou Bul Padstal between Thabazimbi and Brits.

Police recovered two firearms, an undisclosed amount of cash and a wallet containing an identity document, driver’s licence and bank cards belonging to one of the victims. The items were allegedly concealed inside the VW Polo, which was also seized.

Provincial police commissioner lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe commended the role played by private security companies and rural safety structures, saying their close cooperation with police continues to strengthen efforts to combat crime in rural areas.

The accused face charges including robbery with a firearm and possession of stolen property. Police investigations are continuing.
