Another deadly crash on the R510
Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Thabazimbi – Two people lost their lives and another was injured in a tragic motor vehicle accident on the R510 just outside Amandelbult on Wednesday afternoon, 25 February 2026.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 14:00 and arrived on the scene just minutes later. The collision occurred after the ‘koppies’ outside Amandelbult and involved six individuals, including the driver of a bus.
According to emergency responders, the occupants of a Toyota Corolla were the most severely affected. Two of the passengers in the vehicle were declared deceased at the scene. A third occupant sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. The remaining three individuals involved in the crash, including the bus driver, reported no injuries and did not require medical evaluation.
The incident was attended to by emergency and support services, including Limpopo Traffic, Thabazimbi SAPS, a state trauma vehicle, a government medic vehicle, a state ambulance, Netcare 911, Amandelbult Fire and Rescue, Northam Fire and Rescue, and Thaba Fire and Rescue. Firefighters from Thaba Fire and Rescue worked to extract the casualties from the wreckage. P&K Towing and Rescue also assisted on site.
Forensic Pathology Services from Bela-Bela processed the scene. The roadway was reopened to traffic at about 19:00 once emergency operations and investigations had been completed.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
The latest tragedy once again highlights the dangers along the R510, a road that has seen multiple serious accidents in recent years, and serves as a stark reminder to motorists to remain vigilant and responsible behind the wheel.
Why is the R510 particularly dangerous?
The R510 has gained a reputation as one of the most dangerous roads in Waterberg. Upgrades that started in 2022 stalled in 2024 when the contractor abandoned the project, leaving narrow lanes and no shoulders on a route heavily used by mining traffic and buses between Thabazimbi, Amandelbult and Northam. Residents have repeatedly urged SANRAL to complete the widening project to improve safety.
Recent fatalities on the R510
The R510 has seen several fatal accidents in recent months. Earlier this year, on 22 January 2026, one driver died in a head-on collision with a bus transporting schoolchildren. In another incident on 31 August 2025, two people lost their lives in a head-on crash, again highlighting the dangers along this stretch of road.
The R510 has increasingly been labelled “the road of death” by residents after a series of serious accidents in recent years.
