Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Thabazimbi – STOP means stop. It does not mean “souvenir,” “decoration,” or “something to steal for fun.”

On 24 February 2026, a concerned resident contacted Platinum Bushvelder about several missing stop signs along Steenbok Street. The resident warned that the situation is dangerous — especially for motorists unfamiliar with the area who may not realise they are approaching a stop intersection.

After conducting our own inspection, we discovered the problem is far worse than a single missing sign. The T-junction at Hibiscus and Steenbok Streets, the four-way stop at Duiker and Steenbok Streets, and the four-way stop at Hamerkop and Steenbok Streets are all missing stop signs. In some instances, even the poles have been removed. Several intersections also lack clearly painted stop lines on the road surface.

This is not mischief. This is reckless stupidity.

Stealing a stop sign is not clever. It is not funny. It puts lives at risk — your neighbours, your friends, your own family members. One moment of “fun” could cost someone their life.

The Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) confirmed that it is aware of the missing stop signs at the Hamerkop and Steenbok four-way stop, as well as along Steenbok Street and at the T-junctions at Rooibok, Hibiscus and Krisant Streets. According to the municipality, road-marking paint has been received and repainting of stop lines at affected intersections will begin shortly. However, TLM is currently awaiting delivery of new stop signs, as there is no stock available. Once delivered, installation at identified intersections will be prioritised.

But here’s the bigger issue: every stolen sign costs money — YOUR money. Replacing vandalised infrastructure comes directly from ratepayers’ pockets. Funds that could be used to improve service delivery are instead diverted to fixing damage caused by a handful of irresponsible individuals.

Community cooperation is essential. Protecting municipal infrastructure is everyone’s responsibility.

If you see vandalism or theft of stop signs, PLEASE report it to TLM’s traffic signs section on 083 687 1883 or contact your nearest police station.

STOP stealing stop signs.
