HOPE FOR AVANYA | Helping Avanya Smile Again

Thabazimbi – On Friday 29 August 2025, the life of five-year-old Avanya Espag changed forever. Known for her boundless energy, love for performing, and the way her laughter could light up any room, Avanya was attacked by a large dog in Thabazimbi. The incident left her with severe facial injuries and deep, visible scars.

Avanya’s recovery will require extensive medical care — including reconstructive surgeries, dermatological treatments, and ongoing follow-up procedures as she grows. But healing goes far beyond the physical. The family is also seeking psychological support such as trauma counselling, play therapy, and confidence-building sessions to help Avanya overcome the fear and anxiety caused by the attack.

School support will also be vital, ensuring teachers and peers are equipped to handle questions or possible teasing, while creating safe spaces where Avanya can feel accepted and rebuild her confidence.

The financial burden of these treatments is overwhelming for the Espag family, who have turned to the community for help. Through a fundraising campaign, they are appealing for donations towards Avanya’s medical and emotional care, as well as for connections to specialist doctors who can aid in her healing journey.
