Looting spree leaves trail of destruction in Thabazimbi
Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Thabazimbi – A night of chaos and destruction unfolded in parts of Thabazimbi when several tuckshops owned by foreign nationals were looted during an overnight outbreak of public violence.
According to Limpopo police, the incidents occurred between 21:00 on Wednesday, 3 June, and 02:00 on Thursday, 4 June, in Regorogile Extension 6 and the Matikiring Informal Settlement.
Police responded to reports that groups of community members were targeting foreign-owned businesses. Upon arrival, officers were allegedly met with hostility and pelted with stones while attempting to restore order. Rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowds.
In total, six tuckshops in the Matikiring Informal Settlement were looted. The estimated value of stolen groceries and damage to property is approximately R394,000. The unrest also left its mark on law enforcement, with three police vehicles damaged by stones. No police officers were injured during the operation. Following investigations, police arrested three suspects aged between 19 and 23. Officers also recovered a 32-inch television and three packets of ice pops believed to have been stolen during the looting.
The suspects appeared in the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 8 June, facing charges of public violence.
Limpopo provincial commissioner lieutenant general Thembi Hadebe condemned the incidents and warned that police would act decisively against anyone involved in violence, intimidation or the destruction of property. Investigations continue.
