Thabazimbi – A burst pipe caused a massive leak close to the old Kumba mine, just outside Thabazimbi, on Sunday 31 October.

Says Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) water services manager Billy Tlhabadira: “The water gushed from the ground for 24 hours, leaving large areas of Thabazimbi town, Regorogile and Ipelegeng without water.”

Tlhabadira explained that the pipe has reached its lifespan of approximately 30 years and could not be replaced in time, causing it to burst. “An estimated 3 megalitres of clean drinking water was lost,” Tlhabadira confirmed. That is 3,000,000 litres of water.

“We understand that it is a major inconvenience for residents when they don’t have water. A contractor has recently been appointed to oversee a project aimed at lessening the water interruptions in the area,” he said.
