When the Earth Burns, Heroes Rise

Thabazimbi – With the land bone-dry and the wind unrelenting, flames once again swept through parts of the Bushveld — but thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters and community volunteers, disaster was contained before it could consume everything in its path.

On Sunday, 13 October 2025, a fire erupted behind Zeldri Park on the Marakele Road. Thaba Fire & Rescue (TFR) responded immediately and, with the help of nearby residents, managed to extinguish the flames within an hour. No property damage was reported — a testament to the swift and coordinated action of the teams on the ground.

But the danger didn’t stop there.

The following day, 14 October 2025, a fierce blaze broke out near Matlabas, reportedly starting alongside the train tracks. The fire raged across roughly 1,800 hectares of land. At one point, 35 vehicles and their crews — many of them local farmers and community members — worked with Matlabas Plaaswag to contain the inferno. The flames were finally extinguished after hours of backbreaking effort, around 20h00 on 15 October.

In the midst of the chaos, one farmer spotted a small turtle desperately trying to escape the heat. Without hesitation, he lifted it from danger — a small but powerful symbol of hope and compassion amid destruction.

A third fire ignited at Amandelbult late that same afternoon, with Thabazimbi and Northam responders, Amandelbult’s Fire Team, and Northam Platinum firefighters all joining forces. That blaze too was brought under control by nightfall.

“It’s been a relentless few days,” said Pierre Loots, director of Thaba Fire and Rescue. “But it’s in times like these that we truly see the strength of our community. The teamwork, the bravery, and the spirit of service — that’s what saves lives.”

Loots added that while the cause of some fires remains under investigation, the recent incidents serve as a reminder of how vulnerable the dry Bushveld is this time of year — and how critical vigilance and cooperation are in protecting both people and wildlife.
