The phrase “show your true colours” comes from old naval warfare. Warships often sailed under false flags to fool enemies — but international rules demanded they reveal their real flag before firing a shot. To attack without raising your true colours was considered piracy! So, when battle was near, a ship had to hoist its actual flag — literally showing its true colours. 
Today, the saying reminds us that eventually, everyone’s true intentions come to light... just like those sneaky pirates.
