Thabazimbi – The Elandskuil Bridge is once again underwater (5 April 2025) after the sluice gates at Hartbeespoort Dam were opened upstream on Saturday. With the Crocodile River running high, the bridge has become impassable, and surrounding road edges have suffered significant erosion. Parts of the road have already washed away.

Local residents are strongly urged not to attempt crossing the bridge and to rather take the longer, safer detour — even if it means a few extra kilometres. The current volume and flow of the river pose a serious threat to life and vehicle safety.

Pierre Loots, CEO of Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue, issued a heartfelt warning: “Please, even if it takes longer, your life is more valuable than a shortcut.”

Loots also asked motorists traveling the Thabazimbi-Ellisras route to exercise extreme caution, especially when overtaking trucks. “The roads are wet, visibility is poor, and trying to pass large vehicles under these conditions is a recipe for disaster,” he said.

Thabazimbi Fire and Rescue remains on standby to assist in emergencies. But prevention starts with every driver choosing safety first.
