New office pet?
Thabazimbi – On Thursday 27 March 2025, a large snake caused quite a stir when it was discovered coiled up in a tree near the office buildings at Vlakpoort Mine, just outside Thabazimbi.
Emergency teams from Thaba Fire and Rescue and Wildmed Emergency Services responded swiftly to help remove and safely release the reptile back into nature.
Although some believed the snake to be a Mozambique Spitting Cobra, others suspected it might have been a python – possibly the Southern African Python. What is clear, however, is that the snake meant no harm and was likely just seeking shelter or a safe spot to rest. Both species are known to climb trees, especially in search of prey or to avoid predators.
While encounters like these can be startling, snakes play an essential role in controlling pests and maintaining ecological balance. Still, it’s important to put safety first – never attempt to remove a snake yourself.
