Thabazimbi – The Van Der Walt family continues their quest for justice as the court case involving André Hoffman, the suspect accused of assaulting 32-year-old Leon van der Walt, progresses.

According to court documents, Hoffman appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 28 November 2024. During the proceedings, the judge ruled to extend Hoffman’s bail, initially set at R500, until 21 January 2025. Hoffman paid the bail and was released. He faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The case stems from an alleged brutal attack that took place on 24 September 2024 at a restaurant in Thabazimbi, where Leon worked as a waiter. The attack left Leon unconscious and severely injured, resulting in ongoing medical challenges, including debilitating headaches and brain swelling.

LATEST UPDATES
On Tuesday, 21 January 2025, the Van Der Walt family and their supporters gathered at the court for the scheduled hearing. Unfortunately, the case was postponed once again.

The accused’s attorney requested a delay due to another legal case against Hoffman scheduled for February 2025. The attorney explained that Hoffman is currently unable to afford all the legal fees and needs to resolve the other matter first. As a result, the court agreed to move this case to 7 March 2025.

While the nature of the other case against Hoffman cannot be disclosed due to legal restrictions, it has contributed to the delays in this matter.

Hoffman’s bail has been extended further, leaving the Van Der Walt family waiting even longer for a resolution.

The Van Der Walt family remains determined to see justice served.

In an interview with Platinum Bushvelder, Monique expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the community. “We’re still holding onto hope,” Monique said. “This case means everything to us. It’s been an incredibly rough journey, and we need justice for Leon. The support, patience, and advice from our community have been our strength, and we can’t thank everyone enough.”
