“Let’s work together to stay safe — avoid the rivers, take precautions, and have a wonderful 2025!”
Angelique Loots, director Thaba Fire and Rescue

Thabazimbi – Recent heavy rainfall has led to increased water levels in Thabazimbi’s rivers and streams, prompting Thaba Fire and Rescue (TFR) to issue an urgent safety warning to the community.

Elandskuil Bridge closure
The Elandskuil Bridge was officially closed on 8 January 2025, at 19:15 due to rising water levels. TFR director Jannie Rossouw emphasised the importance of avoiding the bridge and other flooded areas to ensure public safety.

Safety precautions from Thaba Fire and Rescue
TFR has shared the following safety guidelines to protect residents:

  1. Avoid rivers and streams, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
  2. Do not use rowing boats, rafts, tires, or other floating devices on the water.
  3. Refrain from swimming or fishing while water levels remain high.
  4. Do not cross bridges that are overflowing.
  5. Heed warning signs placed at high-risk areas. These signs are there for your protection.
  6. In case of danger, contact emergency services immediately. Do not attempt to assist others without proper training and equipment. Emergency responders are equipped to handle such situations promptly.

Rainfall and risk areas
Thabazimbi has experienced approximately 315mm of rainfall over the past three weeks. High-risk areas include:

  • Eland Street
  • Warmbad Road (R510) near Kumba (Stinkdraai, heading out of town)

While rumours have circulated on social media about the Crocodile River overflowing, TFR confirmed that the river has not yet flooded.

Current road conditions
Despite a recent voice note claiming the Warmbad Road was closed, TFR confirmed that it remains open as of 13 January 2025.

Community cooperation
TFR has shared their messages widely on social media and community groups, urging everyone to prioritise safety and adhere to guidelines. By working together, the community can minimise risks during this challenging period.

For any emergencies, please contact Thaba Fire and Rescue immediately. Let’s ensure a safe and secure 2025 for all.
