Thabazimbi – A family of three was left homeless on Sunday, 11 February, when their home in Ga-Botha informal settlement was consumed by flames.

The fire started at approximately 02h30 in the morning with the family still inside. They were fortunate enough to wake, just in time to escape to safety. The 8-year old girl was described as very brave during the ordeal. Unfortunately, most of the family’s humble possessions were destroyed in the flames.

It is alleged that the fire was started by a known suspect from the area. The police briefly searched for the suspect and arrested him soon after the incident.

The Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) executive mayor, councillor Midah Moselane, accompanied by councillor Ronny Manyama, member of executive committee for Infrastructure and Community Services, visited the family to console and to inspect the area.

TLM Disaster management officials erected a temporary relief-tent for the victims of the fire. The mayor also gave the family blankets, clothes and sundries. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured during the fire.

Every year, countless lives are lost, and families ruined due to fires in informal settlements.

In an interview with the Platinum Bushvelder newspaper, the mayor said: “If any member of the public and the Thabazimbi community wishes to assist the victims of this tragic fire, it would be greatly appreciated. Any donations are welcome; clothes, blankets, shoes and food for the Ga-Botha informal settlement fire victims.”

You can drop off any donations at TLM Disaster Centre offices next to the licensing offices or contact 082-079 9335 to make arrangements.
