Limpopo – The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is calling on all pet owners across the province to take precaution and take their pets to their nearest state veterinary clinic for a free rabies vaccination.

Statistics from the World Health Organization shows that despite knowledge and technology, rabies continues to kill more than 55,000 people around the world annually.

Rabies is a disease caused by a virus that affects the nervous system and is caused by exposure to the saliva of infected animals through open wounds and mucus membranes. The exposure may include bites, small nicks that break the skin or even licks of the eyes, nose and mouth.

It is important for communities to note that all domestic animals and human beings are susceptible to rabies.

To protect you and your family, free rabies inoculations for all dogs and cats have been made available in October at various points throughout the province.

Please mark these dates on your calendar:

  • 7 October – Bethanie, Makoppa
  • 9 October – Zimthabi
  • 11 October – Dwaalboom Clinic
  • 14 October – Rethabile
  • 15 October – Thabazimbi, Ipeleng
  • 16 October – Regorogile
