Thabazimbi electricity crisis NOT averted
Thabazimbi – A sigh of sorrow sweeps through Thabazimbi as the news is spreading about the electricity crisis that has been looming over the municipality the past few weeks.
The Thabazimbi Local Municipality (TLM) held two special council meetings this week regarding the electricity crisis in Thabazimbi during which a company who is currently assisting the TLM in negotiating with Eskom, made a presentation to the council.
The company agreed to pay the R37.5 million over to Eskom, on behalf of the TLM in order to avoid the power being cut.
In order for the TLM to enter into a loan agreement, various legislative directives have to be followed.
For the TLM to enter into a loan, a public participation process has to be followed which includes comments of the Treasurer. Having adopted the resolution on 2 October 2017, the company referred to above, together with the acting municipal manager, continued to negotiate the terms and conditions of payments with Eskom. The negotiations were reassigned to the newly appointed Municipal Manager and negotiations were continued by him on 4 and 5 October 2017. Unfortunately an agreement couldn’t be reached and power interruptions will be continued by Eskom, as was communicated a few weeks ago.
“We are unhappy that despite all efforts, this negative outcome resulted. We will still continue to negotiate with Eskom and all stakeholders in this regard and hopefully a solution will be found,” says Dr Bertie Joubert, speaker of TLM.
Furthermore, the TLM welcomed the newly appointed Municipal Manager, Mr TG Ramagaga, and Manager of Corporate Services, Mr JJ van der Merwe, this week – and expect the Chief Financial Officer and Manager of Economic Development and Planning at the TLM offices on 1 November 2017.
In the TLM’s special council meeting of 3 October 2017, the council resolved that the positions of Manager Technical Services and Manager Community Services will be re-advertised on Friday 6 October 2017.
